Christmas is almost here and we have a fun holiday jello shot to share with you. They are bright red, festive, and perfect for holiday parties or casual get-togethers. Seriously, these Cranberry Jello Shots are going to win over your guests!

What is a Jello Shot?

“Jello Shots” are flavored gelatin infused with liquor, such as vodka and rum. Since many jello shots are made with the JELL-O brand flavored gelatin, they’ve developed the name “jello shots”. You can use any brand of flavored gelatin though — and you can use just about any flavor of gelatin.

Jello shots are usually served in small individual-sizeddisposable plastic cups, as you see in our photos. Sometimes these are called plastic portion cups, souffle cups, or even condiment cups. You can buy these small plastic portion cups at many grocery stores, liquor stores, restaurant supply stores, or even online. If buying online, we recommend theseJello Shot Cups with Lids.

Cranberry Jello Shot Ingredients

To make this Cranberry Jello Shots recipe, you will need 2 ingredients (+ hot water):

If you wish to garnish your Cranberry Jello Shots with sugared cranberries as shown in our photos, you will also need sugar and fresh cranberries.

How to Make Cranberry Jello Shots

To make this Cranberry Jello Shots recipe, simply add the cranberry JELL-O mix to a mixing bowl. Pour hot water over the dry gelatin mix and stir until the gelatin is dissolved. Stir in chilled vodka and then divide the mixture among your jello shot cups. You’ll want to fill the cups up to almost the top.

We recommend making these jello shots the day before so that they can set overnight in the refrigerator. If you make these the same day that you’ll be enjoying them, make sure you make them at least 4 hours prior as it will need to set in your refrigerator for at least 4 hours.

If you are adding the sugared cranberries on top, add them right before serving.

Jello Shot Tips:

-Do jello shots have to be refrigerated?

You do have to refrigerate jellos shots to set the gelatin (to have it go from liquid to a more solid state). Once the gelatin is set, the jello shots can stay out of the refrigerator during your party or get-together, however, we think that jello shots are best served chilled.

-How many jello shots per 3 oz box of jello?

You will get about 12-15 jello shots with one 3 ounce box of gelatin.

-How long do jello shots last?

When stored in a plastic cup with lids (or another air-tight container), jello shots can last up to a week in your refrigerator. You could enjoy them a bit beyond that week, but for the best consistency and flavor, we recommend enjoying within a week.

A standard recipe made with 3 ounces of Jell-O powder calls for 5 ounces of 80-proof vodka and 11 ounces of water, but this results in a shot that tastes watered-down. To make a stronger shot, use just 4 ounces of water and between 8 and 14 ounces of vodka (to taste)

Does the alcohol have to be cold for jello shots? ›

If you are in a hurry, you can set your jello faster by having your liquids as cold as possible when starting to make your shots. You can have your alcohol in the freezer to get it cold, and/or you can add some ice cubes in with your cold water and remove the ice that's left after 2-3 minutes.

What is the trick to making jello shots? ›

If making them from a box of flavored gelatin: Dissolve the box of jello powder into boiling water and stir until dissolved. Then add ½ cup COLD alcohol and ice cubes to help cool down the mixture faster. Then pour into molds and place in the fridge immediately.

Can you put too much vodka in jello shots? ›

Jello shots won't set properly if you add too much alcohol. Generally, a basic batch of jello shots is made with one cup of juice or water, one packet of gelatin, 1/2 cup of cold water and 1/2 cup of alcohol. However, jello shots can be made with as much as 2/3 cup alcohol without changing their texture.

How many jello shots does a 6 oz box make? ›

1 small box of jello yields about 15 jello shots (2 cups of liquid). 2 boxes (or 1 large 6 oz. box) yield 30 shots, which will fit nicely on a baking sheet to transport them easily to the refrigerator.

Do jello shots get stronger the longer they sit? ›

Jello Shots, like life, are all about balance. That said, if you want a strong one, it is possible if you leave it in the fridge long enough. In a Supercall experiment, we found that the strongest Jello Shot that will set is three-to-one ratio of 80-proof alcohol to water, and it took a full day to become mostly solid.

Do you put lids on jello shots when hot? ›

Pour the jello mixture into the plastic cups, filling about 3/4 full so there is room for the lid to be put on later. Refrigerate the shots for 2-3 hours or until set. Put a lid on each cup and store in the fridge until ready to serve.

Should you chill jello shots upside down? ›

To do it, simply pour your liquid Jell-O shot into the cups, add the lid, and then flip each one before refrigerating. The result is a shot that sticks to the lid rather than the edges of the cup, allowing you easy access to that Jell-O goodness and making it so much easier to slurp down.

How far in advance can I make jello shots? ›

It's a good idea to make layered jello shots the day before the party, so each layer has enough time to set.

Do jello shots get you drunk? ›

If you make the basic Jell-O shot with a single 80-proof liquor, the alcohol content comes out to be about 12 percent ABV (24 proof). That's equivalent to the average wine. While a couple of 1-ounce shots may not get you drunk, overindulging on these shots can happen more quickly than you might expect.

Can you substitute juice for water in jello shots? ›

What brand of vodka is best for jello shots? ›

But the best vodka for jello shots is a good middle-shelf option. I'm not talking about high-end $35 a bottle stuff. That's for martinis and vodka sodas. A $12 bottle of Absolut or Smirnoff will work just fine.

Is tito's vodka good for jello shots? ›

Vodka: Vodka is the most common liquor in jello shots, but you could also use rum or tequila. A top-shelf vodka isn't needed for this recipe because the fruity and sweet flavor of the jello will balance it out, so something midlevel like Tito's would work great.
