Finch Coonhound Mixed Breed (Medium) Male, Young Pekin, IL

Size

(when grown) Med. 26-60 lbs (12-27 kg)

Not good with kids,

Spayed or Neutered,

Story

Finch is a 5 year old 60lbs red tick coonhound with a voice like David Allen Coe. He has many typical hound tendencies like being vocal, constant curiosity and nose to the ground, but he is also very food motivated. He LOVES going on walks, treats, and is dog friendly and would like a dog brother or sister in his forever home. He is potty trained in his foster home that he has lived in for 2 years. Finch is a sensitive guy. He comes from a home where he was unsure of new people but generally tolerated them outside of the home. He is more protective of himself and his family when people enter his home if he is not comfortable with them. However, his foster mom has found that if they, along with the new person and his foster dog sister, goes for a walk outside then he's more comfortable allowing the new person inside the home when done. They have also found success if he is on leash and treated when the new person enters that also works well. We do not recommend small children as it can take him a while to feel comfortable and trust his surroundings. Finch will need a family committed to him and his future socialization if they want to have success with this gorgeous copper guy.If you would like to give Finch the chance he deserves, apply online for him today!

Links Labrador Retriever Mixed Breed (Medium) Female, Young Pekin, IL

Size

(when grown) Large 61-100 lbs (28-45 kg)

Details

Not good with kids,
Spayed or Neutered,

Story

Links is a long-term shelter dog. LIfe in an adoptive home with be a long-term journey. Here's what a new life with Links would look like:The first 3 monthsBonding with her new owner without introducing her to any outside influences or visitors to your home. If someone is coming over in that first 90 days, put her in a crate shut in a room. The focus will be on helping her feel trusted and secure with you. No visits to stores, dog parks, etc. 3-6 months+If you have visitors, put her on a leash and instruct them to ignore her under all circ*mstances. Do not let them approach her, make eye contact or talk to her. Hold the leash firmly, calm her down by using treats and instructing with basic commands no "it's o.k. Links or any other talk that will feed into her insecure behavior." Once she is calm and in a sitting position, have the visitor toss her treats but ignore her. Focus on confidence building and positive introductions without making her feel unsafe. Once she is relaxed, put her in her kennel so you don't overstress or overstimulate her. 6 months +Once she starts to become relaxed with people coming into your home with low stress contact, allow her to approach people at her comfort level but instruct them not to reach out to her to pet her or invade her space without making her feel uncomfortable. At this point, it's about Links taking life and getting to know people at her comfort level without pushing her limits. Seriously...give this girl a few minutes to warm up and she'll blossom. She recently went to a group activity and initially, she only felt comfortable with her handler and would shy away from others and look to her handler for comfort and protection and if strangers pushed her past her comfort level too fast, she would growl in fear. After a short time, she was interacting with everyone in the group and even nudged some for more attention. The second time she went to meet the group, she was rolling on her back, playing with toys in a relaxed state. They actually called her the bell of the ball! We are working hard to socialize her and build her confidence but that will only truly come from being in a settled home with a familiar family that is committed to her. She is dog friendly and would do best in the home with another dog that can help build her confidence. The family that gives Links the time to adjust and become comfortable will truly be rewarded with a happy and loving companion for life!

Athos American Pit Bull Terrier German Shepherd Dog Male, Young Pekin, IL

Size

(when grown) Med. 26-60 lbs (12-27 kg)

Details

Spayed or Neutered,

Story

Athos needs a special champion. He was born here at the shelter a little over 2 years ago and has been adopted and returned twice since then. Each experience carries its scars and unfortunately, Athos's scars will take commitment to overcome. There are many things that make him good, lovable, and even ideal in many ways: he rides well in the car, loves to play ball with people, doesn't beg for human food or get on the furniture without permission. He listens well on walks, even when he notices a squirrel he'd probably like to chase. He likes to people watch out the window and gives kisses when he's feeling cuddly and affectionate. However, something has happened to Athos that prompts him to react true to the expectations of his breed when triggered, and he will need the work of a strong handler who understands the Belgian Malinois makeup. They are instinctively protective and benefit highly from early socialization, and it is evident that Athos did not receive that. Athos has completed a board and train program with a trainer specialized in his breed, but that doesn't override his instincts in the moment when he is startled. For example, Athos has fallen asleep comfortably on the couch with a trusted person, only to be startled awake when an unexpected family member entered the room. Hackles were up, teeth were shown, and growls were heard as his instinct told him he was protecting his person from an intruder. Once he realized he recognized the visitor, he was fine and calmed down but it is in those moments Athos can be menacing. People with hoods up (like sweatshirts or coats) spark the same kind of fearful reaction. Because of his lineage, combined with the unsteadiness of a life in and out of the shelter system, Athos will only be considered for adult-only homes with a history of dog experience, preferably with the Malinois or GSD breed. He is gorgeous, smart, and affectionate with the people he knows, so the person with the right experience who can help him work through his reactions when startled will have an amazing dog for life. If you are interested in Athos and would qualify, please give us a call and a manager will discuss him with you further. Tauro American Staffordshire Terrier Mixed Breed (Medium) Male, Adult Pekin, IL

Size

(when grown) Large 61-100 lbs (28-45 kg)

Details

Spayed or Neutered,

Story

Tauro is a dog who finds joy in simple things. While dogs like him might not always stand out, it's important to recognize how remarkable he truly is. Despite bearing physical scars from his past, Tauro warmly welcomes humans with a smile. He takes his seizure medication without fuss, mixing it with his kibble like a champ. Though his seizures might seem alarming, they merely cause his head to shake a bit. His foster family worries more about them than he does! Tauro carries on with playing, eating, and snuggling until the episode passes. He adores his corgi sister, loves chasing frisbees, and undoubtedly deserves a forever family to shower him with love. Tauro would do best in a home with no cats, and smaller, docile dogs.
